The South Downs Way
The only National Trail to lie entirely within a national park; it also passes through or by five National Nature Reserves.
Stretching 100 miles (160 km) from the ancient cathedral city of Winchester in Hampshire to the white chalk cliffs of Eastbourne in East Sussex, the South Downs Way is one of England’s most cherished National Trails. Traversing a beautiful and varied landscape of rolling chalk hills, wide open downs, hidden valleys and picture-perfect villages, this route offers a quintessential English walking or cycling experience.
The trail follows the ridgeline of the South Downs, offering spectacular panoramic views across the Weald to the north and the English Channel to the south. Along the way, you’ll encounter iron-age hill forts, Neolithic barrows, and charming market towns such as Lewes and Arundel. Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy spotting skylarks, butterflies, and perhaps even a red kite soaring overhead.
With well-signposted paths and relatively gentle gradients, the South Downs Way is suitable for walkers and cyclists of all abilities, though some sections can be more challenging, particularly during wet weather. The trail passes through the South Downs National Park, ensuring unspoilt countryside and a sense of tranquillity throughout.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ramble, a multi-day hike with overnight stops, or an adventurous cycle tour, the South Downs Way offers a rewarding journey through some of England’s most iconic scenery. Our luggage transfer service takes the weight off your shoulders, so you can fully enjoy the trail without the burden of a heavy pack.
