Founded in 1093 by Roger of Montgomery, this Norman Castle carries the distinction of never having fallen to the Welsh. Built early during the first Norman incursions into the region it steadfastly stood against Welsh counter-attacks in the subsequent years. From here the Normans set about their Irish campaigns. Sited high on a ridge between the two tidal inlets, the views are breathtaking and they alone make the site is well worth a visit.
