Responsible Tourism as a Pathway to Sustainable Tourism

The South West Coast path is the longest waymarked distance walking path in England and with nearly a third of all visitors to the region coming specifically to walk the coastal path, generating an estimated £300 million each year it goes without saying that The South West Coast Path is big business.
At Luggage Transfers we fully endorse and practice responsible tourism and are committed to showing that tourism can be a positive experience for all parties involved, whilst minimising negative social and economic impacts. We are also committed to ensuring that our own economic success does not adversely affect the south west’s most beautiful natural resource – its coastline.
We know that walkers are by their very nature concerned about the environment and the impact of their own actions and we are proud of the difference our customers can make just by using our luggage transfer service. For example:
- When we started our business we recruited around 30 quality drivers from Jobcentre Plus offices across the region, thereby reducing unemployment and at the same time contributing towards sustainability within the local communities that have been hit hard by the recession.
- Based on an average season’s Carbon Calculation we estimate that this year we will remove around 250 tonnes of harmful carbon emissions from the atmosphere by removing literally tens – and in time - hundreds of cars from the coastal roads of Cornwall every day.
- Luggage Transfers will be actively taking part in conservation events along the coast path. In the past we have taken part in ‘The Big Newquay to Watergate Bay Tidy Up’ with our team picking up unsightly litter from the Coast Path to highlight the message ‘Responsible Tourism as a pathway to Sustainable Tourism’
- Luggage Transfers currently provides at least £2,000 per year to the South West Coast Path Association through our walker donation scheme and also our through our SWCP business membership scheme whereby paying accommodations get enhanced web accommodation listings on our web site. This money goes towards repairing and enhancing the SWCP amongst the other charitable work they do.
Luggage Transfers believes that locals, tourists and businesses alike need to be responsible for the resources that are capitalised upon for the purposes of tourism, so by using the service we provide, our customers are supporting us to make a real difference to the world around us. By putting one foot in front of the other and taking in the world class views, they can relax at the end of a long day safe in the knowledge that they’ve helped us to do our bit to keep the Southwest........absolutely beautiful!
